Living in the city means you are surrounded by strangers. Establishing mutual trust and mutual respect with strangers is essential in urban life. Have you ever paid attention to a stranger who was sitting next to you on a bus or in a restaurant? When you go out today, try to observe one stranger, and carefully record his/her appearance, actions, and conversations with others. Selecting material is important for writing. But which material has the most aesthetic potential? What counts as an important and worthy subject matter? Prejudices tend to make us filter out those whom we think are too ordinary, or incidents that do not appear dramatic enough. One of the keys to this exercise is not to pre-set themes or force “deeper meaning” on your writing, but to pay attention to everyday life in a city and the people who live here with you by recording what you see without judgements.
