Intro
We believe that reading is not a one-way experience, but rather a conversation with the text. To read is also to create. Since the 1970s, renowned author Xi Xi has continued to write about Hong Kong, and we developed this website to showcase her work and to provide a platform for readers to understand life in Hong Kong in the past, to reflect on the present, and to tell their own stories. We hope to hear different voices and we look for a more inclusive society.
3 Texts by Xi Xi
We have selected three texts published by Xi Xi in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, respectively. The texts focus on various social situations and issues in Hong Kong, and we believe that it is through formal innovation and experimentation that Xi Xi establishes new ways of observing the world and responding to problems. You can read and learn more about these three texts here.
Writing Prompts
Readers can discover not only the “past,” but also the “present” from Xi Xi’s work. The strategies described here are developed from her work and can be applied to observe Hong Kong today. We hope you can write your own stories based on these writing prompts.
We Write
The works showcased here are mainly by the participants’ who joined our creative writing workshops titled “Our Xi Xi | Our City.” The participants came from different backgrounds, and while some regard Chinese as their first language, some do not. They all read Xi Xi’s works and wrote their own stories based on our suggested prompts in either Chinese or English.
